Sweet greats Jana
Dearest Bobby,
I have found your approach to music to be so inspiring, that I have declared February 18th as Bobby McFerrin Day in my classroom. On that greatly anticipated day, we watch your performances and interviews, reflect on our own singing practices and make music together. Thank you for sharing your deep passion for the human voice with such humility and intentionality. Anytime you are in the Nairobi area, come and join us. We would love to improvise with you.

Hi Bobby! As a musician I have become fascinated with the relationship between music and the brain/energy/healing. I watched Notes and Neurons and felt the scientists had a long way to go to understand what you understand instinctively. Two things I wanted to say; firstly, I think what you experienced from the Miles Davis gig was Awe which has a huge physical and mental effect. Secondly, maybe you know, in the last couple of years, they discovered neurons that react only to singing/singing with instruments. Not to instrumental music or speech. They don’t know why we have them. That’s it, keep doing what you do, you are an amazing being! X
Thank you for what you do. You help to heal my soul.
Thanks for your music. I listen to your vocabularies album with Roger Treece every day it seems and it hasn't gotten old yet. It's a unique achievement in recorded music, in no small part thanks to your brilliant improv skills ironically.
Thanks for your contributions to music, which have brought color to my life when I'm listening.

Bobby, thank you for showing us that music is universal…and the wonder of the human voice “Psalm 23,” is one of my favorite pieces. Recently the Minnesota Chorale sang it as a gift of recordings in honor of Helmut Rilling’s 90th birthday. Just sharing with you from YouTube. Blessings to you and yours https://youtu.be/V1VDk_7n-s4?si=xwzlYiNDOLK7l_eQ
Thank you, Bobby. That’s all. Just thanks.
Loved your performance in Finland a few years ago! You make me happy!
Love ya!

I have never encountered anything like your music. Musical improvisation and singing are my simply pleasures and truly shaped who I am, bringing confidence and serenity. When I started making a capella compositions myself, I stumbled upon your music. It really embodies this powerfulness and playfulness - of the human voice as well as the human spirit. The spirit is meant to improvise and innovate. Not limit and imitate. I hope to be able to come to the US once to attend one of your Circlesongs jams. That's the dream. Have a blessed one.

It's been 12 years since this moment that changed my life. My dream was to see him live and when I found out he was coming to Chile I started crying hahahaha. Finally, having sung this improvisation alongside Bobby was one of the most beautiful gifts in life. Today, 12 years later, I saw this moment again that still seems unreal to me.
eternal thanks

One crisp morning, I entered into Ms. Deloris Johnson’s 5th grade class in Vancouver, WA. The year was 1995 and to my surprise, music was playing. It was a song I would hear EVERY morning of her class, that year. As a 38 year old mom of 3, I use the song to get their headspace right on the way to school. Ms. Johnson taught us how to write our first typed-letter on a computer. The subject? The man himself. My 10 year old self scrambled to think of what to say. Because, after all… this was such a treat for me! I typed my letter. We sent our letters. Weeks later. Headshots and signed letters were returned. I was floored. I put my things in a hole in the wall in my room for safe keeping. Sisters, you know. They can be nosey. I moved and the letter and picture was lost. I write this here so I can remember this part of my past before my memory gets the best of me. I wish I still had those in my possession. But the memories were a lifetime for me. Thank you, sir.

Dear Dr. McFerrin (Bobby!),
Thank you so much for your music and way of being in the world! I hope to see you soon at one of your CircleSongs events in Berkeley. And I hope in some way to contribute to personal and collective healing through making music together with others in some way, for the rest of my life.

Hello,
My name is Lauren Holleman, and I am a member of the Valley Concert Chorale. I was told you needed altos for your concert. I was one of the I first altos to respond. When asked if they needed more altos, Bill told me they didn’t need anymore.
I believe they are trying to get me back for not performing in last Spring’s concert. I was ill, and I have the doctor’s note to prove it. I was highly contagious, and the majority of the members of VCC are elderly. I find this ironic, as I am one of two African-American members in this choir. I am VERY UPSET I did not have the opportunity to sing with you.
A little about myself: I am a classically trained singer from the University of North Texas. I sang with the Dallas Symphony Chorus at Carnegie Hall in 2011. In 2010, only 100 out of 212 were chosen to sing Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Helmut Rilling. I am TALENTED, and I believe VCC purposely did not allow me to sing at your concert.
Is there ANY WAY I could sing with a chorus at one of your concerts? I don’t have a lot of money, but I would try to find a way to sing with you. It would be an honor.
Thank you,
Lauren Holleman

I’ve thought for decades about expressing my joy, appreciation honor to you Bobby. I’ve sought to teach others what I could about your gift as a on- air jazz dj for decades… have been fortunate to have witnessed your gifts in person many times over the years most recently in Boston at the start of the pandemic.
As a young woman in the early 90s you and I came face to face at Ben and Jerry’s in the Bershires. I was stunned to silence, quietly thanking you out of the roof of my car…
Thank you. For your spirit, talent, voice, gifts.
Thank you for teaching so many to listen, hear, connect in joy and harmony.

When I was a kid, my dad played "The Voice." Since then, I've watched as this extraordinary artist introduced something deeper and more joyous and connected than any artistic expression I'd ever encountered.
You've survived the "pop music" label, and in fact transcended all labels to revel in the playground that attracts us bipeds (and others) like a rare earth magnet.
Speaking of playing, I thought of you immediately when I listened to an extraordinary artist by the name of Abel Selaocoe. If the two of you end up playing in the stream together (if you haven't already, that is), well, that will be something! He made my day, as you have countless times throughout my life.
Thanks for that, by the way.

In town with a Cirque du Soleil production, we had no expectations whatsoever. We were treated to an absolutely phenomenal experience!
We were so happy to see our Whistler invited onstage to perform with this outstanding ensemble. Thank you to Bobby, and to all involved in this wonderful initiative.
