My name is Julia and I am the daughter of one of Mr. McFerin’s biggest fans. I am reaching out to see if you could possibly accommodate a special request

Our father, Richard, recently underwent emergency brain surgery to alleviate pressure caused by a tumor. He is currently stable at the neuro ICU at MGH hospital in Boston and has some ability to speak and respond to limited commands.

Richard has been a fan of Bobby for as long as I can remember. Growing up we would sing his songs on long car rides and would make our own musical collaborations. A few summers ago Dad had the opportunity to attend one of Bobby’s camps, an experience he cherished. Since the camp our dad has participated in multiple circle sings in the Boston area. A recent highlight was when he was invited to sing on stage with Bobby when he performed at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH last month. Dad, quite literally, jumped over the seats for the opportunity. Needless to say, he is a super fan!

The hardest thing for us as a family right now is our inability to be by his side at this time. Due to Covid-19, we are unable to enter the hospital. However, we have had the chance to speak with him briefly over the phone, and we send him recordings of our voices everyday.

While I know this may be a lot to ask, I was wondering if it were possible for Bobby to record a brief message of encouragement that we could play for our dad. It would really mean the world to him and would bring him so much joy during this hard time.

I really appreciate your help and please let me know if this is at all a possibility.

Thank you for bringing so much joy to our troubled world.

Staying home as a result of the Coronavirus has given me time to listen to old albums. I’m listening to the original movie soundtrack to “Porgy and Bess”. I still get goosebumps when I hear your Dad. What a beautiful, natural voice. I first heard this in the early 60’s while visiting my brother at college. I was an 8th grader, but even then “Bess You is my Woman “and “Oh Where’s my Bess” made me cry. It still does. I was thrilled tonight to find it on Apple Music and to hear it without the scratches. And, I am a a jazz musician and love your work. Did your Dad sing any jazz? Thank you. James Cope. Washington,Pa.

    Dear Bobby,

Thank you very much for your positive music and attitude. I’ve been really enjoying listening to you now as isolation is becoming more and more prominent here in the UK with COIVD-19. It’s helping keep some anxiety away!

Also, I saw you speak in Trinity College Dublin back in 2013 and one of your comments about improvising and listening has really affected the one I think about playing with people, so thank you very much.

    Warm regards,

    S
